Why it matters
A contractor license lets a company pull permits at addresses the issuing authority covers, wherever the company is based. The list therefore includes regional firms and out-of-state companies that register to work here, alongside local shops.
For a homeowner, a base address far from the project is worth a question about who will be on site and how return visits and warranty calls are handled.
What this number can’t tell you
- “Based” is the business address on the license list, or a compared company’s own listed office. It is not a service area, and a company may run crews from elsewhere.
- The two lists share no ID; businesses are joined on an identical registered name or a company record, so one business listed under two names counts twice.
- This count uses each compared company’s own listed office, so the out-of-state total can differ by one or two from the licensed-side-by-home-state finding, which uses the license-list address.
- Kansas City, Kansas, Lee’s Summit, Independence and other cities keep their own contractor lists, which are not included.
What to do with it
- Start from the city page for your area to see which licensed businesses are based nearby.
- If a contractor is based far away, ask whose license goes on the permit and who will do the work.
