Why it matters
A business licensed in Independence is not automatically licensed in Kansas City, Missouri or in Johnson County cities, and the reverse holds too. For a project in Independence, the Independence license is the one that matters; for a project across the city line, check that list instead.
What this number can’t tell you
- The Independence data has no license number, so matching is by business name and city only. A business spelled one way in Independence and another way on the Kansas City, Missouri list counts as unmatched, so the matched share is a floor.
- Independence licenses individuals; the business name is what each license holder lists, not a company license.
- Lee’s Summit and Kansas City, Kansas publish no list we can use, so a business licensed there is not counted.
What to do with it
- For work at an Independence address, ask whose Master Electrical license will go on the permit.
- For work elsewhere in the metro, check the company’s record for the license the city at your address asks for.
