Why it matters

A contractor needs the license of the authority that permits your address. A Kansas-based electrician that holds only a Johnson County license would need a Kansas City, Missouri license before pulling a permit there, and the reverse is also true. Because the lists are joined by name, check the city list for the company yourself.

What this number can’t tell you

  • A missing match between the two lists can reflect a different registered name; “both sides” is a floor.
  • Other cities, including Kansas City, Kansas, license separately.
  • A license does not show workmanship or insurance limits.

What to do with it

  • Check which authority issues permits at your address before you call anyone.
  • Use the metro directory filter to see only companies licensed on your side.
