Why it matters
A contractor needs a current city license when the permit is pulled. If the expiry date on the record falls between your signed quote and the start of work, the license needs to be renewed first, so confirm it before the job is scheduled.
What this number can’t tell you
- A renewal filed after the observation date is not reflected; the date shown is the one on the city list that day.
- The list appears to carry current licenses only, so it cannot show how many licenses lapse without renewal.
- An expiry date says nothing about complaints, insurance or workmanship.
- The Johnson County file we use carries a status, not an expiry date; county licenses are covered by the status finding.
What to do with it
- Compare the expiry date on the company’s record with your planned start date.
- If the date is close, ask the contractor to confirm the renewal, then check the city’s live lookup on the day you sign.
