Why it matters

A homeowner in Topeka choosing from the city’s list is choosing from a mix of local firms, Kansas City firms and firms with phone numbers from other states. Where a firm works from affects travel time, call-out charges and who comes back for warranty work.

The list is the only public record the city links; it does not say where any business is based, so the area code is the best signal it carries.

What this number can’t tell you

  • An area code is where the phone number was issued, not where the business is. Mobile numbers keep their area code when a business moves.
  • The list is dated Aug 6, 2024. Businesses licensed later are missing, and some listed licenses may have lapsed.
  • The list carries no license number, class or expiry date, so it cannot show how long a business has been licensed in Topeka.
  • 23 names on the list may be a person’s or carry no business word; they are counted here but not published.

What to do with it

  • Ask a Topeka contractor where its crew is based and who handles return visits.
  • Confirm the current license with City of Topeka Development Services before work starts, because the list the city links is dated.
