Why it matters
A permit is the city’s record that licensed electrical work was declared at an address. Permit volume shows how much residential electrical work goes through the city and when, which is useful context for lead times and for judging how active the market is.
What this number can’t tell you
- The city dataset has no contractor field, so these counts cannot show which companies did the work. Company-level permit history on our records comes from an older city extract that ends May 9, 2025.
- Issued permits are not completed or inspected work, and unpermitted work is not counted.
- Kansas-side cities, including Johnson County cities and Kansas City, Kansas, are not included.
What to do with it
- Ask whether your job needs a permit and who will pull it; in Kansas City, Missouri it must be a city-licensed contractor.
- For a service upgrade, ask about the utility disconnect and inspection schedule before booking.
